Ever wonder what hiring managers and recruiters look for when they view your resume or portfolio?
Do you have a dream job in mind, but are afraid of applying? Now is your chance to ask the hiring pros directly.
Get insider tips on ways to better position yourself for your next UX research, strategy or design role at a free event in Plano, Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The event will feature a panel discussion with experts including projekt202 Talent Manager Marc Bedinghaus and professionals from Capital One, Fidelity Investments, Intuit, JPMorgan Chase, and TEKsystems.
Ahead of the event, Marc shared a few pointers and expectations:
What should attendees expect to learn or take away from the Jan. 29 event?
People will discover what recruiters/hiring managers look for in a resume/portfolio, making yourself marketable even when you aren’t looking for a job, interviewing deal-breakers, what candidates can do to stand out during their portfolio presentations, and what questions candidates should be asking during the process.
You've said the goal of a resume should be to entice the reader, not tell the whole story. How should applicants best determine what information to leave in -- and what info is best left out -- to grab a hiring manager's attention?
You’d be safe to stick to skills, responsibilities, project examples, and results.
With skills, discuss the tools you use, not how good you are at them or a Nintendo power-up list showing how good you are on a scale. For responsibilities, share what areas you personally handled, not your team’s responsibilities.
In sharing project examples, you don’t want to include a laundry list of items completed, but it’s good to include at least some context on the types of projects you worked on so hiring managers can see how relatable it is.
Use your results to demonstrate how successful your work or contribution was, how it impacted the project or business, and what you learned from the experience.
Candidates for design positions may feel they need to put more effort into how their resumes look. Does the resume design take precedence over content?
No, it doesn’t. In fact, oftentimes it ends up failing them because it just makes the content hard to consume. Remember, you’re trying to make a first impression in a world where recruiters and especially hiring managers spend maybe 30 seconds on a resume at first glance.
When people ask what you do, what's your "elevator speech"?
I’m a Talent Manager for an experience-driven consultancy where I connect designers, researchers, developers and program managers to meaningful opportunities.
